Nathan Bedford Forrest's men outflank the yankees.

As Sherman pushed towards Atlanta he became very concerned about Nathan Bedford Forrest sitting in Mississippi, that he would move into Georgia and savage his supply lines. He ordered Gen. Sturgis to invade Mississippi from Memphis and deal with Forrest.

Forrest, through his scouting, was all too aware of the Union advance. He decided to meet the federals at Brice's Crossroads, even though he was greatly outnumbered. He had 3,200 men versus 5,000 infantry and 3,000 cavalry under Sturgis.

Realising the Union cavalry were three hours ahead of their infantry, Forrest attacked them at Brice's Crossroads, where the terrain was thick and the roads muddy. He defeated them before the infantry could properly form. Plus Forrest thought the infantry would be too tired to offer any real help once they joined the battle. The Union force was completely routed and Forrest chased them for 26 miles, capturing huge amounts of supplies, guns and ammunition.

This was Forrest's greatest victory of the civil war.

TIPS

Forrest defeated this much larger force by unlimbering his artillery within only yards of the federal line and firing canister. This is what the Confederate player has to do as well. Get into line as best you can, wait for the Union Cavalry and your own artillery, and then hit them. Unlimber your artillery within one hex of the Union forces and get stuck in.

Also, use your better troops and Forrest. At crucial close combats attach Forrest and let him lead the way.

Remember; you must defeat the Cavalry before the three large brigades of infantry can join the fray.

As the Union player you have to stop this from happening. Your cavalry is not the same quality as Forrest's. So don't try to tangle with the rebs until your infantry has moved up. You have more firepower than the rebs but you have to wait for it.

And in the dense woods use Supported Line, rather than Battle Line. Otherwise you might trip yourself up and not have enough room to maneuver.
