Modifiers of Musketry and Close Combat

There a few things that affect the strength of a fire combat or charge combat.

On a general note, all formations are vulnerable from fire or a charge attack that is coming from the flank or the rear. So it is important to form a “battle line” where all of your troops form a continuous line that you should not let the enemy penetrate.

However, a unit that is fatigued, broken, disorganized, etc., is probably vulnerable from attack from any direction.

Fire Combat

There are several basic things that can affect the strength of musketry and cannonade fire. They are;

Fire

Weaker

Flanking Fire is worth explaining, as a "refused flank" can affect the strength of flanking fire.

The musketry from Y is normal fire. The musketry from X is flanking fire and so is more severe. However, if there was another Union brigade at A then the the flank of B would be "refused" and would then not be considered to be flanking fire.

This is because if there was another Union brigade at A they would form a continuous front, and B's flank would not be exposed.
